TODAY MOON IS BIGGER THAN DAILYONE

                                                 THE BIG MOON

“Today’s moon in the evening and night sky is five per cent bigger and around 12 per cent brighter than the average full moon,” said Dr Debiprosad Duari, director of M P Birla Planetarium, Kolkata.
Moon is now roughly at a distance of 3,56,800 km from the earth, a little closer than the average earth-moon distance of 3,84,000 km.

The rare celestial event is often described as a “Super moon” by astronomers and skywatchers.
“Today’s moon is at the perigee and also it happens to be full moon,” Duari said explaining the reason of the large appearance of the moon.

Although Indians could enjoy the ‘Supermoon’ but they are going to miss a total lunar eclipse since the totality of the eclipse will start after 7 am tomorrow.

“But people from North and South America, well almost everybody, and people in Europe will see the moon as bigger and also ‘blood red’ in colour. Because during a total lunar eclipse moon does not become black, but gets a reddish-copper tinge which popularly is mentioned as blood red,” the expert on celestial bodies said.

This happens because the red light of the sun’s white light gets least scattered by the atmosphere and falls on the moon during an eclipse making it look blood red, he added.

This rare phenomenon of a supermoon and blood-red moon together was last seen during 1982 and will recur only in 2033.

WONDERS OF VIJAYAWADA

                                        WONDERS OF VIJAYAWADA

Kanaka Durga Temple
Situated on the banks of Krishna River, Kanaka Durga Temple is nestling on top of Indrakiladri hill. The origin of the temple is unknown and it is believed that the deity of the temple is 'Swayambhu', that is self manifested. Hence the deity is believed to be immensely strong.

Many Legends are there on how the deity came here. Once, when the menace of demons increased to an unbearable proportion, Sage Indrakila did penance. When Goddess Kanaka arrived to grant his wishes, Sage Indrakila asked her to sit on his head and save them all from the problems of demons. Since then Kanaka Durga has stayed in Vijayawada. The reference of the temple is found in many ancient Hindu scriptures.

Pilgrims from all over India visit the temple during Navaratris. The temple is famous for its Dussehra celebrations, Saraswati Puja and Theppotsavam.

Prakasam Barrage
With its impressive structure, Prakasam Barrage is one of the main attractions in Vijayawada. Prakasam Barrage is a road bridge built on Krishna River. Three canals run from it to all parts of Vijayawada providing water for irrigation. It also works as a water regulator.

Completed in 1957, the Prakasam Barrage is an impressive 1223.5m long, modern regulator and road bridge that stretches across the river Krishna. Its panoramic lake and the three canals that run through the city give Vijayawada a Venetian appearance.

The barrage first completed in 1855, is one of the earliest major irrigation projects in Southern India. It was named after the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam. The scheme irrigates nearly one million ha, converting the Krishna delta into the richest granary in Andhra Pradesh.

Victoria Jubilee Museum
The Victoria Jubilee Museum in Vijayawada is an archaeological museum established as early as 1887. It is located on the Bandar Road. Even after the passage of more than one century since it was established, the museum continues to attract and awe visitors with its varied and unique collection of arts and artefacts.

The exhibits here range from pre-historic tools, pottery, stone and copper plates, gold and silver coins, arms and armoury, textiles and coins, manuscripts and stone cut writings, objects obtained from excavations at historical sites, paintings etc.

There is a colossal granite statue of the Buddha and also a well preserved standing white limestone figure of the Buddha from Alluru, dating from 3C- 4C. An idol of Lord Shiva, beautifully sculptured and believed to belong to the 4th and 5th centuries is another attraction. The entry to the museum is free, but photography is not allowed. The museum remains closed on Fridays and public holidays.

Kondapalli fort
Kondapalli Fort, also locally known as Kondapalli Quilla, is located in the Krishna district, close to Vijayawada, the second largest city of Andhra Pradesh, India. The historic fort on the hill (Eastern Ghats) located to the west of the Kondapalli village was built by Prolaya Vema Reddy of Kondavid during the 14th century, initially as a pleasure place and a business centre, along with the Kondavid Fort in Guntur district.

In later years, it was used as a military fortification and the British placed a strong garrison here. Situated around 16 Km from Vijayawada, Kondapalli Fort is a popular picnic spot among the locales. Kondapalli village is not only famous for the fort but also for the handmade toys. Made of light wood they are exported to other countries as well.

Undavalli Caves
Undavalli Caves, located in the Undavalli village of Guntur district, near Vijayawada are 7th century four storied caves. These caves are placed at the summit, the high mount facing the charming Krishna river. A major attraction here the mammoth statue of Lord Vishnu, sculpted from a single granite piece, in its reclining posture.

These caves are tourist attractions due to its excellent specimens of cut-in architectural and sculptural models. It is believed that Buddhist saints used these caves as a rest house during the monsoon.

Mogalarajapuram Caves
The Mogalarajapuram Caves in Vijayawada is one of the prime attractions of Vijayawada. The Mogalarajapuram Caves is popular for the three cave temples in the caves. The cave temples date back to the 5th century.

Most of the temples are worn out and what only traces of an unnatural architectural beauty remains. One of the three temples is still in a good condition. Lord Nataraja and Lord Vinayak are the two deities whose idols are found in the cave temples of the Mogalarajapuram Caves.

The uniqueness of the Mogalarajapuram Caves lies in the Ardhanareswarar Murthy that was found in the cave temples. Studies have proved that such idols are not found anywhere in south India.

Bhavani Island
Bhavani Island is one of the most favoured travel attractions in Vijayawada. The 133 acre island stretched dreamily in the Krishna River, 4 km upstream from the city.

Covered with mangroves and flower bedded gardens, woodlands, sparkling water bodies and undulating meadows, Bhavani Island is just the right destination for fun, frolic and amusement. One may also opt to treat oneself to a boat ride and explore the serenity of the surroundings.

HISTORY OF VIJAYAWADA

                 HISTORY OF BEZAWADA

Vijayawada earlier known as Bezawada, is the third largest city in Andhra Pradesh, India, located on the banks of the Krishna River and bounded by the Indrakiladri Hills on the West and the Budameru River on the North. Vijayawada literally translates to "The Place of Victory". Its prominence as a major trading and business center has earned it the title of, “The Business Capital of Andhra Pradesh”.

Situated along the Madras-Howrah and Madras-Delhi Railway route, this is the largest railway junction of the South Central Railway region. The city is in Krishna District, about 282 kilometres (171 mi) from the state capital Hyderabad. The very mention of Vijayawada, first brings to mind delicious mangoes  and pickles. Lying in the rich coastal delta of the state, the cuisine of Vijaywada is spicy and deliciously varied.

The discovery of Stone Age Artifacts remains along the banks of the river from Machilipatnam to

Nagarjuna Sagar indicates that this area was inhabited at that time. Vijayawada is also a centre of Andhra culture, and is a religious center. The Chalukyas of Kalyan once conquered this place, and the famous Chinese Xuanzang (Hsuan-tsang) had visited this place in  639 AD when Buddhism was at its zenith in the region. Kings Choda Gangadeva and Ananga Bhimadeva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty in the 12th century whose capital was in modern  Bhubaneswar and who built the Lingaraja temple had re-annexed considerable part of modern Andhra region and marched up to Godavari but could not cross the wide river bed. He established a town 'Vijaya Bahuda' which means 'return after winning' which became known as Vijayawada.

During the British Raj the city experienced significant growth. In particular, the completion of the

Prakasam Barrage in 1959, and railway bridge on the Krishna River have helped the region expand
its agriculture and commercial base. Vijayawada Railway station is one of the busiest railway junctions in India. The regions around the city have fertile soil and are irrigated by the river Krishna.
